Title:Yellowstone: IBM iDataPlex System
Publisher:UCAR/NCAR
Publication year:2012
Language:eng
Resource type:Service/Supercomputer
Description [Other]:The Yellowstone system delivered supercomputing capabilities that are central to fulfilling NCAR's mission, including support for climate modeling, weather forecasting, and other critical research in the atmospheric, oceanic, and related sciences. Yellowstone was a 1.5-petaflops IBM iDataPlex cluster with 72,288 processor cores -- Intel Xeon E5-2670 (Sandy Bridge EP) 2.6-GHz, eight-core processors -- 144.6 TB of memory, and a Mellanox FDR InfiniBand full fat-tree interconnect. Yellowstone encompasses a centralized disk storage system and data analysis and visualization clusters. The centralized disk resource, called GLADE, provided an initial 10.9 PB of usable capacity and 91.8 GBps aggregate I/O bandwidth. The data analysis cluster, Geyser, comprises 16 nodes, each with four 10-core, 2.4-GHz Intel Xeon E7 (Westmere-EX) processors, 1 TB of memory, and one NVIDIA Quadro 6000 GPU. The visualization cluster, Caldera, comprises 16 nodes, each with two eight-core Intel Xeon E5-2670 processors and two NVIDIA Tesla M2070Q GPUs. GLADE, Geyser, and Caldera nodes are all connected to the same FDR InfiniBand fabric.
